Planning your school or group visit

What you need to know to plan your school or group visit to the Museum.

Booking your visit

We are open 9.30am - 4pm daily and closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday.

Bookings are essential for all schools and groups.

If your visit includes SparkLab, Sciencentre please also read planning and booking your visit to SparkLab.

Cost

A general visit to the Museum is free.

Additional experiences such as SparkLab, school programs, special events and exhibitions are optional and may incur a cost.

School Programs led by Museum staff are charged at $6.00 (incl. GST) per student/group member. Supervising adults are free. You will be invoiced after your visit. 

SparkLab and some exhibitions are charged exhibitions (GST free). You will be invoiced after your visit. 

Group size

Maximum group size depends on which exhibitions or student programs you are booking.

To align with Queensland Government’s COVID-safe Roadmap, there will be restrictions to maximum group sizes to allow for social distancing and the capacity limits of exhibitions and spaces. This will be discussed in more detail with you by one of our Bookings Officers.

Length of visit

Your length of visit will depend on which area(s) of the Museum you will be visiting.

A detailed itinerary will be created for each individual group by the Bookings team.

The Museum now has 1.5 hour booked sessions. Special exhibitions will need to be viewed within your 1.5 hour Museum session. SparkLab sessions are currently 1 hour duration, but will change to longer 1.5 hour sessions from Monday 13 July. If your group wants to attend both SparkLab and the Museum, multiple sessions will need to be booked. The Museum will be undertaking additional cleaning at various times throughout the day to ensure the safety of all our visitors.

Getting here

Queensland Museum South Bank is located on the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets, within the South Bank Cultural Precinct.

By bus

Set down in Grey Street outside ENERGEX Playasaurus Place, Stanley Street Tunnel or Stanley Place.

Due to Brisbane City Council Brisbane Metro South Brisbane construction work, the bus lay-up area will be temporarily located along Montague Road from 26 June – Early 2021.

By train

Get off at South Brisbane station and cross the road at the Grey and Melbourne Streets intersection.

By car

There is a public car park car park directly below the Museum. Enter via the Stanley Street tunnel or Grey Street.

The car park is pay on entry, and accepts card payment only.

Arriving

Conditions of Entry:

In accordance with the Restrictions on Businesses, Activities and Undertakings Direction (No.2)  Queensland Museum is required to keep contact information about all visitors and staff for contact tracing purposes for a period of 56 days.

Schools and groups must supply an accurate record of the names of every person attending on the day. A contact form for all students/children will be sent to your booking contact prior to your visit. An updated hardcopy record of this must be brought with you on the day and put in the collection box on entry. All adults (parents, carers and teachers) entering the campus will be required to fill out the individual Contact form (58 KB) pdf document icon, available to print and complete before the visit, or available on entry.

Schools and groups will enter the Museum from the Museum's Grey Street entrance (ENERGEX Playasaurus Place, Level 0). We ask that you to arrive 15 min ahead of any pre-booked experiences.

Please call the Queensland Museum Cloakroom on level 2 on +61 (0) 7 3840 7633 to announce your arrival.

A Visitor Services Officer (VSO) will meet you at the Museum's Grey Street entrance and confirm the details of your visit, discuss your itinerary and confirm invoicing/payment details. 

Bag Storage

Bag storage facilities for groups will be available at the entry and exit point on level 0, however please note the handling and storage of personal items will be conducted by students and teachers. Staff will not be handling any personal items.

No responsibility will be taken for loss of valuables. 

Supervision of students

You will be required to divide your students into small, supervised groups and explore our free exhibitions at your leisure.

Preferred supervision ratio of adults to students: Prep 1:3, Years 1-6 1:5, Years 7-10 1:10, Years 11-12 1:15.

Teachers and accompanying adults are responsible for the supervision of their group members while visiting and must remain with them at all times. Please move around the museum in smaller groups as instructed, to ensure social distancing from other visitors is observed. 

Signage will indicate capacity limits for each exhibition or space inside the museum. Visitor Services Officers are available to assist visitor flow, however, it is the responsibility of group supervisors to ensure that their group itineraries and allocated time limits are observed.

Museum Explorer shop has a maximum capacity. Please allow only small, supervised groups into the shop.

Moving around the Museum

Groups are asked to observe social distancing with respect to visitors, when using the stairs or escalators. Groups should not use the lifts unless necessary. Lifts will have a maximum capacity of only two people.

We ask that groups consider other Museum visitors. Please observe social distancing and keep noise levels down in public galleries.

Lunch & refreshments

ENERGEX Playasaurus Place (EPP) on level 0 will not be available for food and drink breaks. The green areas around the museum precinct provide a perfect spot to have a break or enjoy some lunch.

Water bubblers will be disabled so students are encouraged to bring water bottles for use during scheduled breaks.

School and group lunch packages are also available from QM Café; these can be booked through our online booking form.

Toilets

On your arrival, toilets are available at the entrance on Level 0.

If we have reached the maximum capacity of school and group visitors at the Museum’s Grey Street entrance (Level 0), then groups visiting SparkLab will be asked to use the toilets in SparkLab (Level 1) rather than the toilets on Level 0.

During your visit, toilets are located on Levels 2 and 4 in the Museum.
Toilets also available in the Café on Level 2 and Parent's Room on Level 0 and Level 2.

Visitors with individual needs

We aim to provide equitable access to all visitors.

There is lift access to the Museum from the car park and for bus and taxi passengers from Grey Street. Lifts will have a maximum capacity of only 2 people.

All entrances and areas are wheelchair accessible.

Disabled toilet facilities are located on Level 0 and 2.
